Mission Statement

there was a time, my loves
when a gentleman or a lady
had to know certain things
granted, there was less to know
but they had to know what there was
a little philosophy, a little history,
a little music, a little art

a little poetry

here, i am doing my bit for you
if you wish to be a poet, or a better poet
or simply to know poetry
you should know
that English is a glorious thing
the language of Shakespeare, Bronte and Yeats
and that poetry has a history
what distinguishes an good poet
from an adequate poet
is that a good poet writes from a position of strength
a knowledge of his predecessors and their techniques
he or she need not write in their styles
but should understand the evolution that brought us

to this place

what distinguishes a great poet
from a good poet
is that a great poet writes for all history
to understand why there are no rules
a great poet learns those rules
here then i offer you
100 poems that matter
they are not the only great ones
but they are ones you should read at least once
there are many others you should read
i'm sure you will

i will publish these poems as i find them
a few at a time
when i reach 100
i will start another blog
i hope the google is good to you
